The Clinical Method: In the Analytic Perspective

Psychoanalysis is a method of treatment of the sufferings of the speaking being, based on the fundamental rule: you can say what you want. This procedure creates in turn the necessity to reflect on the enormous field it unveils, and it requires other methods, different from free association and interpretation, for such a reflection to be unfolded, anchored, explained. One of them, the clinical method, already existed before psychoanalysis, but was completely renovated by Freud based on some sharp cuts, among them:– a strict separation between that which may be defeated by suggestion and that which may not,– a sharp delimitation between the sufferings that respond to the laws of biology, and those that respond to the logical needs that drive the speaking being,– the distinction between psychic reality framed by fantasy, and what is outside of it, in a “real” that, with respect to the nature of any reality, at some point responds to chance.This book deals with the clinical method that derived from the Freudian method, with which it does not coincide, although it depends on it and contributes to its extension and development.
